Old World Gatsby Glamour Wedding Inspiration

Every Virginia Beach local knows the Old Cavalier Hotel. When I was in high school, most of my friends and I all worked for Children's Activities for the beach resorts, so that place and other Oceanfront hotels are very much part of our personal local history, back then and now. The Old Cavalier closed down a few years ago, was purchased, and now finally has plans to be reopened back into its restored icon in the near future. I know I'm excited about it because not only is it a historical sight to see, it is the quintessential wedding venue for brides and grooms dreaming of old world glamour for their weddings, especially if they love the trendy art deco theme.

Sweet Baking Lifestyle Engagement Session

As the big blue monster said himself, C is for cookie, and those are the best! But when it's a chocolate chip cookie baking engagement session at home with Andrew and Tianna Photography, there seriously is nothing sweeter or more perfect.

One of Erica and Josh's favorite activities together is just relax, drink wine, and bake cookies all the while Josh sings to his beloved. These two lovebirds actually met in college where they were both Theatre Arts majors and just always had the unspoken knowledge that their relationship was "the one." And when you know, you know! They dated for a few months before Erica transferred to Regent University in Virginia Beach, and Josh wasn't going to let that be the end of it. He got a job here locally to be near her, and in a little over a year later, he proposed!

Fun and Creative Wedding Shower Ideas

It's no secret we love bridal showers around here. And like the wedding world, no two showers are alike! So today, we have rounded up some of the most fun and creative bridal shower theme ideas from around the web to inspire you for your pre-wedding celebration. While we call them "bridal showers" for all Googling purposes, we really are celebrating "wedding showers!" From wedding party Olympic games to art deco, there's a little something for everyone!

Pastel-Hued Kitty Hawk Pier Wedding

Get ready for an incredible "how they got together" cross-country story because these two gorgeous Outer Banks brides take the cake (or donuts in their case!)!

About four years ago, Caroline and Elke found each other in Iowa at a local Crossfit gym. Elke was in grad school earning her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Caroline was coaching with the Iowa Hawkeye Field Hockey program. After a couple of girls' nights out at the Crossfit gym and several long conversations later, they found themselves inseparable from one another. But like all romantic comedies, their inseparableness was put to the test when their careers gave them a bicoastal relationship-- Elke in Philadelphia where she began her medical writing career and Caroline in San Diego to continue her Olympic dream with the U.S. Field Hockey team.

For what seemed like a year multiplied by ten, the distance only grew their love as well as their amazing career opportunities. Caroline found out she was going to be a 2nd time Olympian and compete in the London Summer Olympics and to Elke's East Coast by continuing her hockey career as a coach at Columbia University.

After a couple seasons at Columbia University for Caroline and a solid couple of years building a career with Elke's company, these lovebirds decided to move to Pennsylvania together where Caroline was returning to compete with the U.S. National team once again. That was when Caroline decided she couldn't live without Elke any longer, so that Christmas, Caroline asked Elke to marry her.

Now both in New York City, they knew they dreamed a relaxed beach wedding down in the Outer Banks with all of their closest loved ones. With pastel colors and bright, sunny smiles, this Kitty Hawk Pier wedding captured by Elizabeth Henson Photos is one sweet whirlwind of a finally happily ever after!

Jewel-Toned Ruby and Marsala Wedding Inspiration

One of the best parts about southeastern Virginia is that America started here. Literally. And since the early 1600's, gorgeous English-inspired colonial plantations settled along the James River and beyond, particularly in Charles City just west to the colonial capitol of Williamsburg. But the even better part is that you can actually get married at some of these historical landmarks! So when this beautifully romantic stylized shoot came into my inbox from Michael Simon Photography, I was all but too eager to share such inspiration: in theme and in location!

Draped in rich jewel-toned hues of ruby and Pantone's marsala, Zahara's Events and Design and the amazing creative team dreamed up a dramatic earthiness that only befits the deeply-rooted-in-history Westover Plantation.

With golden brass table decor, wildly vibrant red peonies and carnations, and modern vintage stationery, this sophisticated inspiration is perfect for the couple who loves bold details yet still wishes to honor timeless tradition.

Walking Around Williamsburg Engagement Session

Oh, Williamsburg! It's obviously and totally a biased opinion from this 'Burg-based editor, but it's the best place for engagement session in all of southeastern Virginia! Well, one of the most top best places, at least.

For Suzy and Dave's engagement session with Memories by Mere Photography, they wanted some meaningful parts of their personalities to show through while they walked around the Historic Area in Williamsburg, so they got nostalgic about their first date at a coffee shop to the bride wearing her traveling skirt that had been with her on trips across the world (and would now be with her on her biggest adventure-- marriage!).

With their wedding day having a slight inspirational nod to J.R.R. Tolkien, it was also a must to visit Mermaid Books, a cool vintage bookstore right off of Prince George Street, for a few cuddly reading photos!

Where to Donate Your Extra Wedding Stuff

We're all about reusing and recycling, and it goes the same with weddings! Did you know that you can donate your leftover wedding flowers? Or even your leftover wedding reception food? Well, you can! And we have rounded up the best ideas for what to do with your extra wedding stuff after the big day.

From selling to donating to upcycling, there are plenty of options when it comes to finding a new home for your wedding goodies long after that last song gets played at the reception.

Nautical Inspired Wedding on the Eastern Shore

Lilly Pulitzer bridesmaid dresses, monograms as far as the eye can see, a bayside venue, and groomsmen in navy blue. Emily and Kyle's big day on the Eastern Shore is the quintessential Southern nautical wedding!

Since Kyle grew up on the Eastern Shore and both the bride and groom love the water, they knew they wanted to get married by the bay and that the historical Elkington property would be a dream come true.

From having everyone they love in one location to taking in the beautiful night sky while running through sparklers, Emily and Kyle thought everything was absolutely perfect! Because the couple and most of their wedding guests were loyal Virginia Tech Hokies, one of their favorite memories was when their live band played the intro to "Enter Sandman" and everyone was jumping on the dance floor.

Captured by Alexis Jones Photography, this Southern couple pulled in the preppy and nautical touches through the brass fish hooks on the groomsmen boutonnières, the oyster-patterned ties, and by digging up the bourbon wedding tradition.

Cute Ideas for What to Wear While Getting Ready

Ladies, this one is for you today! With the help from Virginia Beach wedding planner who has seen it all, Jill Brown of Sunkissed Events, we've gathered up the best of the best when it comes to what to wear while you're getting ready. From colorful robes to embroidered boyfriend shirts, there are some really great options out there for brides and bridesmaids. Because if you're going to be stuck in front of a camera for hours during hair and makeup, you might as well look amazing from start to finish! :)

Spotlight On: And I Love Her Violins

virginia beach wedding violinist

Fun-loving, easy going, and sweet is how Beth, the owner and violinist of And I Love Her Violins describes her favorite type of wedding couple. Since she and her team of talented Hampton Roads musicians are known for learning any song you have your heart set on, it's no wonder why so many brides and grooms have given rave reviews of these beautiful music makers.

This amazing lady is no stranger to music! With 14 years in the Virginia Symphony as a member of the viola section and oodles of classes directing high school Orchestra students, Beth lives and breathes in musical notes. And when it comes to weddings, what makes her spirit fill with joy is when at the end of the ceremony, the happily married couple waltz down the aisle to their favorite song.

From the Outer Banks to all over southeastern Virginia, Beth and her team arrive in tow with the instruments and songs of choice. From the classic violin or guitar to a full string trio or quartet (and a few others!), brides and grooms' dreams do come true! But because let's be real, nothing beats live music played specially for you. Cue the swoon!

When Beth isn't playing at a wedding or teaching others, you can likely find her fishing with her two sons and husband or working at the computer on wedding-related fun with a kitty named Kitten on her lap!

Sunset-Filled Yorktown Beach Bridal Session

Salty air and sandy toes, Megan was envisioning a beach bridal session for her special pre-wedding bridal portraits with Crystal Reyns Photography. With a grassy field, a gorgeous rock wall, the Coleman Bridge in the background, Yorktown Beach was the perfect, quiet setting for this lovely bride, especially since the future ceremony's location was just a short drive from it. And let's be real, who doesn't love some sunset gorgeousness?!

Best Local Spots for Beach Engagement Sessions

It's summertime and what better way to celebrate our local resources and your engagement with some of our area's best beach locations for photos-- on the Peninsula and the Southside! We know the population of Hampton Roads gets pretty high up there between the months of May and September, so we have rounded up the spots that tend to historically have fewer people than the Oceanfront… making it perfect for you and your photographer to capture some special moments!

Navy Blue and Pink Nags Head Wedding

Whether she is coordinating one or decoding clues herself, Lauren adores scavenger hunts. Knowing her love for the hunt, Andrew planned a clue-filled day that left Lauren completely thrown off-course when she received a champagne saber... and not an engagement ring. That night, Lauren and Andrew parted ways to get ready for a celebratory dinner, and upon her return to his apartment, silver and gold streamers, candles, and a room full of balloons greeted her. After taking in all the romantic details, she noticed Andrew was down on one knee to pop the question!

For their wedding day, deciding a location was by far the easiest decision they made. While both Lauren and Andrew reside in Ohio, the sun-kissed sand and salty sea of Nags Head, North Carolina drew them in just like a ton of Hampton Roads couples every year. What they wanted most for their wedding was to bring together all the people they love and throw an amazing party in celebration of just that!

Despite that they both wanted a traditional, church ceremony, they chose Nags Head Golf Links for their venue because of their love for the town and view of the serene Albemarle Sound. Captured by Mary Basnight Photography and coordinated by Glam and Lace, classic and coastal is the perfect description for their big day.

Tying in the areas of the Outer Banks, tables were named after each locale and included a short, sweet description to familiarize their out-of-town wedding guests with the local history. And we all know local history wins our heart every time!

Spotlight on: Maria Grace Photography

virginia beach wedding photographer

Adventurous, joyful, and laid back is how Maria of Maria Grace Photography describes her most ideal wedding couple, especially at that first moment of meeting through the engagement session to the wedding day itself... and even past the big day into married life!

virginia beach wedding photographer

"My favorite part of a wedding is when couples choose to have a first look. It is the most intimate part of a wedding day, and it is just a time for the bride and groom to spend together without any stress or anyone else around.

I also really love the reception and seeing everyone have a great time! Sometimes my second photographer (who happens to be my husband!) pulls me out on the dance floor during a slow song... and well, I don't mind at all about that!"

virginia beach wedding photographer

A fun fact about Maria is that she grew up in a foreign country and spent nine years living overseas, so she actually knew how to speak another language fluently by the time she was four years old! You'll have to ask her what kinds of books she likes to read because it's a pretty diverse selection!

When Maria isn't on location for a wedding or engagement session, this photog considers herself an East Coast hippy who loves visiting finding local and organic treats at restaurants and farmers markets in the area. She also enjoys running either through her neighborhood, on the Noland Trail in Newport News, or somewhere new!

High School Sweethearts Engagement Session

It's not very often you get to hear about real modern day high school sweethearts, and Raven and Willie are here today to share their story! In one of their ninth grade classes at Heritage High School in Newport News, these two met and became inseparable. Raven always knew that Willie was the one for her, however it wasn't until college that she finally listened to what her heart was telling her.

In Raven's own words: "I knew he was the one when we were seniors in high school. I always said he was the one that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. He was the most caring, loving person in world. But of course, at age, 17 we had our trials, and I lost that thought of his being "the one." Then one day during my sophomore year in college, I had what I called an epiphany, and I just couldn't imagine my life without him. Like the thought of him not there hurt. And that's when I knew knew."

So to pay homage to their youthful beginnings, Raven and Willie's engagement session with Luke and Ashley Photography started out at where it all began. With chalkboard backdrops, favorite books, and heartwarming laughs, this one definitely earns a gold star!
