For Josie and Cody, their Outer Banks wedding was about much more than a single day. The couple traveled from Pennsylvania to Corolla, North Carolina, bringing their closest friends and family along for a weeklong destination wedding vacation in a place that already held a special place in Josie’s heart. Having grown up visiting Corolla with her family, she later introduced Cody to the area when they began dating, and over time, it became a meaningful place for them both.
Their wedding at Hill Runner at Penny's Hill Beach Club, a luxury beach house nestled among Corolla's iconic sand dunes, was the perfect setting for a celebration that felt elegant, adventurous, and fun. An OBX Wedding Juxtaposed with Formal and Relaxed
Rather than plan a large wedding closer to home, Josie and Cody intentionally kept their guest list small. Even their wedding party reflected that intimacy, with each of them choosing just one bridesmaid and one groomsman. The result was less like a traditional destination beach wedding and more like an unforgettable gathering of their favorite people in one of their favorite places. Choosing the Outer Banks for their wedding felt most natural, and by booking Hill Runner, a newer event home in Corolla’s 4x4 beach area, it meant getting to the wedding became part of the adventure.
And for the ultimate mashup of opposites, Josie and Cody envisioned a coastal formal wedding with a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, and we love how perfectly executed it was! Instead of competing with the setting, their wedding design allowed the architecture of the home, the dunes, and the beach itself to take center stage.
Barefoot Beach Ceremony Wedding and Wild Horses in Corolla
The wedding ceremony took place barefoot on the beach, where circular grounded florals created a natural altar against the coastline. The floral design by Outer Banks Flowers blended beach and garden-meadow inspiration, bringing a soft, organic feeling to the ceremony by complementing the open area scenery.
The ceremony was kept beach chic and simple, but one especially meaningful DIY detail was a fabric memorial sign draped over one of the ceremony chairs, honoring grandparents who were there in spirit. This is the kind of personalization we adore seeing couples create to really make an event their own.
Even the Outer Banks wildlife got in on the celebration! Corolla is famous for its wild horses, which roam the northern beaches and have become one of the area's most beloved attractions. Visitors often take wild horse tours hoping for a glimpse, although spotting a large group isn't guaranteed.
During Josie and Cody's wedding portraits, the couple got an extraordinary surprise: a group of wild horses wandering through. With the horses appearing in the background and on the beach nearby, the moment became one of those wonderfully unexpected wedding memories that simply can't be planned.
Thoughtful DIY Details With a Personal Touch
The couple found plenty of ways to weave their personalities into the wedding design, including details inspired by two very important members of their family: their pets. And if you've been a reader for awhile, you know we're hardcore fans of furbabies showing up on the big day in some way!
Although Piper the dog and Palmer the cat couldn't attend the Outer Banks wedding, their likenesses were featured on cocktail napkins and matchboxes, turning practical wedding favors and details into little reminders of home.

At each place setting, handwritten marble slab place cards served a practical purpose, too. With the beach breeze in mind, the weight of the marble helped keep each guest's menu and napkin securely in place. It was exactly the kind of intentional detail that characterized the entire celebration: beautiful, useful, and suited to the setting!
Elegant Beach House Reception That Didn't Take Itself Too Seriously
The al fresco reception continued the couple's relaxed coastal formal style with a soft pastel palette and understated details that allowed the architecture of Hill Runner to remain part of the visual experience.
Their petite two-tier wedding cake brought a touch of vintage charm with its delicate Lambeth-style piping while an audio guestbook table with a retro baby blue phone invited guests to leave a message after the tone. And when it was time for their first dance, Josie and Cody chose the Eagles classic "One of These Nights," a fitting soundtrack for a wedding that balanced timeless elegance with easygoing personality.
But the most memorable dance of the night wasn't their first one. At the end of the evening, Josie and Cody (and yes, their fully dressed wedding guests, too!) jumped into the pool together while "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd played. Because the only appropriate way to end a weeklong Outer Banks adventure is absolutely in a swimming pool, still wearing your wedding clothes!
