Covered in delicious sugary goodness, these designs take the cake (see what we did there?) when it comes to wedding inspiration that inspires within and beyond Hampton Roads. Tiers and ruffles, rustic and classic, detailed and simple, shimmery and lovely, these cakes are just downright steal-worthy for your own special day! So without further ado... the best of cakes from 2016!

Rustic Red and White Christmas Wedding in Williamsburg

When a bride and groom says that they picked Christmas time to get married because "Christmas is a time spent with family and for all things merry and bright," our holiday hearts are like Frosty taking a nap in front of the fireplace -- melted and cozy warm. As huge winter wedding fans around here (with our editor-in-chief being a past Christmas bride herself!), Suzette and Shawn's festive celebration gave us all the joy of the season!

From holly berry red bridesmaid dresses to evergreen decor to eco-friendly snow confetti to pinecone-dappled cake, this wedding was Christmas personified as captured by Katherine Sparks Photography. The couple chose a traditional church ceremony (where the bright red aisle carpet actually is perfectly matched to the wedding theme!) with a rustic reception at the Williamsburg Winery that dazzled their guests with a holiday wonderland. To help make this vision a reality, every detail of their wedding reception involved all the love and help from Suzette's friends and co-workers. During lunch breaks, they would all work on wedding details -- from designing to hot gluing! 'Tis the season for giving, and this whole crew definitely gave it in the true spirit of Christmas.

Suzette and her ladies were beautiful visions of sugarplum fairies and all things lovely in their faux fur stoles, glittery gold shoes, and romantic floral halos while the groomsmen (and groomslady!) were dapper in classic black suits and dress that complemented the classic Christmas vibe for the whole day. We're not sure what we loved most -- the red velvet bouquet ribbons, the greenery draped chandeliers, or the late night snack hanging donut frame! Either way, Suzette and Shawn's magical December day has us all dreaming of a white Christmas filled with hot cocoa, carols, and good cheer!

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice Inspired Wedding Ideas

Janeites unite for this gorgeous late 18th century-inspired wedding inspiration! Inspired by the aesthetic and romance of Pride and Prejudice, this photo shoot is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen's timeless tales continue to influence today's 21st century bride or groom. Whether it's through elegant modern calligraphy or pewter decor, any couple can transform their special days befitting of a beautiful novel. And if you're already married or just obsessed with weddings, even your hearts will swoon and make you break out your Regency fan (at least our editor-in-chief did because she concentrated on this era of British Lit in college!).

Captured by Angela Elise Photography and styled by Kelsey Ann Events, the creative team envisioned soft blues, rich mahogany, and delicate whites as their color palette. With a unique twist on a favorite British dessert pavlova, a short sleeve vintage bridal gown with an empire waist and delicate chiffon tail train, and a casual horse photobomb, everything oozed adoration for pastoral times gone by. The presentation style hand-tied wedding bouquet is the perfect mixture of bridal beauty and whimsy and the artfully arranged vintage furniture from Mad Hatter Vintage Rentals helps tell the story of an intimate celebration that the spirited and good-sensed Lizzy Bennet would love!

Romantic Military Autumn Engagement Session

When a couple's proposal story includes the Jumbotron at a Virginia Tech football game, you know there is a really neat story behind their relationship! Even though Sarah knew the proposal was coming, it's safe to say that how Chris asked was a complete surprise. Sarah shared, "It was pretty spectacular. Everyone was going crazy and cheering, and after he proposed, everyone was coming up to us, congratulating us, and asking to see the ring."

On a warm autumn day with Maria Grace Photography, the two lovebirds met up at a gorgeous little park in Williamsburg and then traveled over to the Williamsburg Winery for their engagement session. Inspired by fall-friendly colors, Chris first wore his Navy blue uniform and then switched to a cranberry sweater that complemented Sarah's perfect cream and cranberry scarf and cardigan. But our favorite part of this session is the way this groom-to-be looked at his lovely bride! It's totally what the best romantic stories are made of.

Literature-Inspired Oceanfront Wedding Reception

Caitlin and Laura first met at Longwood University where they majored in English and fell in love surrounded by literature. Years of friendship became so much more, their careers blossomed into libraries and college administration, and finally, after 8 years together when same sex marriage finally became legal in Virginia, they immediately married at the City of Norfolk Courthouse. For their one year wedding anniversary, Caitlin and Laura wanted to host a reception to celebrate with family and friends at The Attic at Waterman's down at the beautiful Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

Inspired by their mutual love of classic novels and literary greats, Caitlin and Laura incorporated some of their favorites into their reception's decor that was all captured by Carley Rehberg Photography. From classic stories like Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice to modern romance anthologies like Michael Kelahan's World's Greatest Love Letters, these two brides had no shortage of options when it came to figuring out which books to have as their table numbers.

For their navy blue and white wedding attire, Caitlin wore rose gold jewelry accents with her white bridal suit jacket and black pants while Laura perfectly complemented her wife's simply chic look with a lace floor-length gown and ribbon sash. We absolutely love their inspiring wedding style, but the best accessory of all was their radiant smiles for each other as their loved ones filled the room love, support, hilarity, and joy.

DIY Wood Slice Ornament Wedding Favors

One of the best things about the holidays is how creative and thoughtful people can get with their gifts... and that perfectly translates to a Christmas wedding! From hot cocoa stirrers to charity donations to knitted scarves, there are so many ideas out there when it comes to winter wedding favors. But there is none more iconic than the tree ornament, especially as they tend to become heirlooms, childhood memories, and sentimental trinkets. Melding some good ole former art teacher tricks with classic birch wood slices, we're sharing a super easy DIY that you can make within 20 minutes... making it the perfect wedding or bridal shower favor to share with your guests! As long as you have an inkjet printer and wax paper, let's get ready to jingle all the way with these beautiful ornaments!

Festively Romantic Christmas Wedding

'Tis the season to celebrate all things red, green, and festive, and this beautiful holiday-themed fĂȘte photographed by Sarah D'Ambra Photography fits the bill magically! Ashton and Tricia's first date was a bike ride to Edenton's classic Taylor Theatre in North Carolina, and the rest is history. After welcoming a son together and growing in their love each day through their careers as farmer and teacher, they chose to celebrate their wedding during their respective winter breaks right at Christmastime.

Their vision of a romantic rustic theme was executed with style thanks to the backdrop of the Jubilant Fields Equestrian Center, a venue whose history is rooted deeply in Ashton's family. A winter wedding made for a warm and cozy ceremony – blankets were provided to snuggle up on a cold day and a full hot chocolate bar and a gourmet s'mores menu at the reception ensured guests would be treated to a heartwarming snack. Pinecones and evergreen sprigs adorned red and green plaid runners, and Tricia's bouquet with accents amidst an all-white array of flowers spoke to the festivity of the season.

From personalized Christmas ornaments to romantic twinkling lights covering the ceiling of a simple but stunning horse stable to the bride's dark brown fur stole and delicate peplum gown detail, Tricia and Ashton's day couldn't have been more perfect both for them and all brides looking for holiday wedding inspiration that is truly unforgettable in the spirit of the season.

Pink and Gray Virginia Beach Wedding

Orie and Jesse wanted their wedding day to be a fun celebration with family and friends, and First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach was the perfect place to do it with their on-site cabins and scenic spaces. After getting ready in the cabins, these two lovebirds shared an incredibly emotional first look that will immediately tug at your heartstrings. Just a few moments later, they moved across the street for a ceremony under a beautifully overcast sky and pledged their love to each other amidst a sea of pink, gray, and all the love of the people who cared about them most.

Captured by Caitlin Gerres Photography, a sweet ruffled cake with matching cupcakes greeted guests as they entered the tented reception area. Tables were decorated with photos of the couple throughout their relationship and a vintage ladder with galvanized marquee letters that spelled out 'LOVE'. This under the stars wedding day was all about Orie and Jesse's journey together, and the beautiful future they would share as newlyweds.
